News from the Diocese:
What can I do? - Not too many years ago, when I was a parish priest, I remember listening to (young) people trying to describe the dilemmas they faced in their lives of faith. They wanted to determine what “to do” in the church (in their lives as an expression of their faith — if they did not feel called to be a priest, a deacon or a religious. That same dilemma presented itself for others who believed that the only way to serve in their parish is to become a reader at Mass or an extraordinary minister of holy Communion. These are all noble callings and vocations — but they are not the only ones available. We should not walk away in distress, thinking we are “not needed” or we “are wrong” for any reason when we are not chosen for these particular ministries. There is so much to do in the church and so many ways to offer ourselves for service......Read More News from the Pope: Pope Francis sends money for Mexico earthquake relief - (Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has given money to the earthquake relief effort in Mexico to help survivors and victims’ families in the worst hit areas of the country. Even though she is Catholic, she’s getting married in a park and I’m not sure if I should go or not. What do you think?” Resolving difficult situations is something a priest is asked to do many times in his life. What becomes very clear about life in this world is that a “one size fits all” approach is rarely adequate when dealing with people made in God’s image and likeness. Yes, thankfully we do have the 10 Commandments and the teachings of Jesus which come to us through the Catholic Church. Even so, life is messy sometimes and we struggle to know what we ought to do. A friend of mine is a religious Sister and after her parents divorced, her Mom decided to get married outside of the Church (I do not think she went through the annulment process); as my friend pointed out, “She’s my Mom. She knows I disagree with the way she is handling this, but charity necessitates that I attend her civil ceremony.” It’s not easy for us to balance our convictions with true Christian charity. Just the same, there are some basic principles that help us discern what we can and cannot do in challenging situations. For example, from the Hippocratic Oath we’re expected to “do no harm.” Following this means we never have recourse to abortion or other procedures that unnecessarily damage our bodies (e.g. tubal ligations and vasectomies). Another principle comes from Saint John Paul’s Love and Responsibility, namely the obligation to treat people with respect. In other words, a human being is never to be used, even for ostensibly noble goals. An example of this sort of manipulation happens when people decide that destroying human embryos in the name of science is morally defensible. It is not. Again, Jesus’ own “golden rule” is as valid today as it was when He first taught it, namely to treat others as we would like to be treated. Finally, the criteria that we must always consider is what charity demands; defined as “willing the good of the other,” charity ought to characterize our actions and our omissions. For example, my aforementioned friend determined that charity meant she should attend her Mom’s wedding, even though it was irregular and not blessed by the Church. However, there are times when charity means that we ought not to attend; I think of occasions when our absence will not cause any real crisis (e.g. a relative or friend that we do not see all that often). God knows we have a duty to live our faith and defend it too – for the times that we feel not attending a civil marriage ceremony will do more harm than good, it’s important that we find a way to share our belief in a non-threatening way. For example, we could buy the newlyweds a Bible and share with them our hope and prayer that God will be the center of their lives. Or we can express that while Catholics ordinarily can only receive the graces of the Sacrament of matrimony in a ceremony presided over by a priest or deacon, we came because we did not want to hurt them in any way. These are difficult situations and even writing about them makes me uncomfortable. God knows that even though we get more practice than we bargained for, it’s always difficult determining what we ought to do. Prayer is the most important component. Sometimes we find that we’ve prayed many hours and still feel a bit unsure. In the end, we can tell God that we are trying to love His people the best we can, but that we only want to do it according to His plan. As Saint Josémaria once pointed out, “We win some, we lose some; repentant, we try again!”
May God show us how to live in the splendor of His truth while loving our family and friends who resist Him! And even though there is a bit more awareness of this reality these days, people still get picked on and pushed around and hurt by the antics of bullies. While some bullies are obvious enough, it’s the bullies they fail to warn us about that I’d like to discuss today. For example, every time I see a parade sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure I wonder if people know the truth about their not-so-hidden agenda. Before anyone reading this gets upset, please know that I’m all for research that will either cure or preclude breast cancer. My sister survived breast cancer but my cousin Tricia did not – I know this is a terrible scourge and I believe we have a duty to do all we can to find a cure. But Susan G. Komen is being victimized right before our very eyes and little is said about this today. Arguably the most prominent and pernicious bully, Planned Parenthood, has done all it can to use Susan G. Komen to clean up its otherwise despicable reputation for preying on women and taking advantage of them during so-called unwanted pregnancies. Five years ago Karen Handel, then Senior Vice President for Susan G. Komen, was fired because she had the audacity to suggest that Komen was really not interested in abortion. Though most Komen employees supported abortion, it was not the work that they took to be their primary mission; finding a cure for breast cancer was their focus. When Komen began the process to untangle itself from Planned Parenthood, initially all seemed tranquil and acceptable. However, Planned Parenthood had merely lulled Handel and others into a false sense of security before pouncing on them in the press and bullying them into basically admitting it was horribly egregious of Komen to consider leaving Planned Parenthood. Heads had to roll and Handel was the most prominent to be fired: her book Planned Bullyhood is well worth a read as it gives a play by play account of Planned Parenthood’s penchant for power plays. Planned Parenthood is a bully and has been for years; our job is to expose these things so that more people will pray for conversion and reconciliation with God. Such conversions are happening and you only have to watch the excellent film “Blood Money” or read the book Unplanned by Abby Johnson for proof. One other bully that gets off easy is the one commonly found at many universities. Many times this bully masquerades as “tolerance” and as long as you agree, all is well. The interesting thing about tolerance is that the people who preach it most vehemently become decidedly intolerant when you disagree with them. Professor Paul Griffiths found this out when he suggested that his university’s method for eliminating racial inequity would be ineffective at best and agenda-driven at worst. For expressing his opinion Griffiths immediately found himself accused of harboring corrupt and dangerous ideas, all because he had the temerity to suggest that the university’s “diversity-and- inclusion industry” is “a disciplinary enterprise meant to herd us toward predetermined goals.” And although he was a tenured professor, the team of tolerant tyrants triumphed: Griffiths retired from the university. Bullying is real and while one might expect to see it in our youth, it’s even more discouraging in our adults. 100 years ago the Blessed Mother taught Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta a simple prayer that would do great good in such situations: “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.” I can think of no better response to the bullies of our time and place. May God show us how to pray for our persecutors and so win grace for their souls!
